On and off relationship
PC General

I've got an on and off relationship with PC gaming. I'll get hooked on a game and play it incessantly for a month. Then once I've beaten it, I won't play another PC game for a year. Although now that I think about it, I see the same pattern with all my gaming habits. Is it possible that there are simply TOO many options out there for gamers? To the point where it's overwhelming? To the point where it's so overwhelming you just lose steam and any desire to play anything?
Well, that's perhaps dramatic. I do enjoy a few games now and then, but I seem to focus on the simpler games. Darwinia or Maple Story, rather than Command & Conquer and WoW. I used to be such a geek, playing RPG's for days on end. But these days I can barely bring myself to play a console RPG without cheating.
I guess the problem is this nagging realization that life is short. The longer I play, the guiltier I feel. As if my mind has a mind of its own and is pushing me to do something "worthwhile" with my life. It's a constant struggle of letting myself just relax and enjoy.
Does anyone else struggle with these kinds of thoughts?

zero : I know what you mean captain. Unless it's a football game, i don't really play games alot unless it's multiplayer with friends, or my PSP on the go. Even than, i haven't touched ESPN 2k5 in months.

mikeike : Yes I have the same problem. hehe this is turning into therapy but it helps me know about me anyway. But I do spend days on end playing a video game and sometimes go on hours without food until my body just 'kicks" and says "you need to eat". But then I stopped playing console games for the time being because one) my old TV was thrown away two) i let a friend borrow my PS2 three) just no time on console when I have work to do on my computer. Unfourtunately, that's where my third reason becomes a problem. I have work to do and the same time my computer has games on it, so I'll give myself a break and start playing the games then it turns into a disruption of my train of thought so I will just sit there for a long time playing as if I had nothing to do.

Chance : It may be something to do with age Capt. I find I have the same issues lately, Im 39 and love gaming, but from time to time just get 'tired' of certain things. I find myself not touching my PsP for a couple weeks. Dunno, I'll always be some kind of gamer, but maybe not as dedicated as I was once.

captain : Yeah, I think you're right. As I get older, time seems to become more of a luxury. Would you agree?
Hence why I can't imagine spending so many hours to play a game like Elder Scrolls 4.

Recent Blog: On and off relationship
Chance : Yes, times getting tighter, and that hurts. I feel like I'm wasting way too much of my life. I still really value all the time I've spent on really good games though. It was <at first> like reading a great book, you couldnt wait to see where the story took you. Now alot of games don't bother with the story much, and that really contributes to me losing interest. If the story is GOOD, the game can suck, and I'll play it. <zelda, >

cmoney2007 : Sorry in advance about this comment but dang some of you guys are old, but i can relate I may be only 17 but i also find myself going weeks and sometimes a month or two without playing my PSP. Games aren't as entertaining anymore its not like when you first got a NES,SNES, or atari those were the games i can still play centipede and mario like its nothing. I assume that we are starting to expect too much from the newer games.I still use my PSP frequently though as a mass storage device and as an mp3 player other than that nothing. Work also takes me away from games.

jesusfreak : well, as you've said captain, pick up a good book instead of sitting infront of the computer . Take a good book, take a walk, ride your biekw tih friends, etc. i just got back from a camping trip (haha no internet =p) for a week or so. Actually there WAS interent strange enough (someone brought their computer to load of digital photos), and well, we didnt go on MS, or even use the internet. we went fishing, bike riding, ate food, chill out, talk, catch up with each other, etc. staying away from the computer for a few weeks is a good thing in fact =.=

Helwig : I know what ya mean, Captian, except that gamer is still inside me.
I buy a game and play it, and only it, for 2 weeks to a month. After that, i get bored and just stop. So then games like MapleStory, Gunbound, and other simple Atari games come in handy. But, i also have the PSP, a wonderful device. For those time when im out skating getting away from my cave (my Room) and the computer screen. Its also handy though, cuz there is a Playstation Store in the city where i get to geek out and talk about games with ppl. See the PSP is also awesome cuz i have Atari, NES, SNES, N64, and soon to have PS1 games one it. hazzah for 4gb Memstick.
But all in all, when the new awesome RPG or FPS game comes out and i get it, Im on it for awhile,
I wouldnt be surprised if i got carpal tunnel by the age of 22 (im 17 btw) if i keep this up,
