I think alot of people already have this in their minds, but in the months looming ahead with the PSP firmware updates and the next wave of games, everything has been very quiet. The PSP as it stands right now for some people have become expensive paperweight. For others the experience is a lot more about filling their time with the games or the music.

Maybe it will be more the games sooner or later, but how much more can you do with this handheld? There is limited memory for any and all applications to run and storage is not at its best for the time being. Do people feel a least bit troubled by this waiting at all? Or are we just sitting boats in the middle of a calm before the storm? Will the games be better visually? But more importantly is all of that worth the wait?

I'm not trying to lose sight of the point here, many people people expect good things to come from this thing. As it stands right now the PSP Eyetoy and GPS are on the way. What then? will the era of emailing and using the PSP as a phone actually make this device the ultimate SUV we all dreamed this would be? Every console so far has had a life cycle of 5 years? With all of these things coming from Sony, what next great thing could there possibly be for the PSP?

Time has proven to secrets can always been hidden and cast into shadows. However, time gave us the open doors to discover what we can't see in foresight. It would be hard to see what other innovations Sony could come up with, then again this could be as good as it gets.

spoo : Honestly, I think the PSP will fail as an "SUV" of mobile gaming devices. The DS doesn't have as many features, but it's much more fun to play, the PSP just doesn't have the support it should from both it's market, and it's creators. Games that come out are either ports of previously existing games, or remakes of old games (Metal Slug for example), or even previously existing titles, with different plots. There are very few games that are unique and original to the PSP (Death Jr. being one example). Everything else has been done, redone, and beaten with a wooden stick.

All this jazz about GPS, organizers, emailing capabilities, will flop. The GPS might be the only thing that stands a running chance with the advent of cars being GPS enabled, since GPS is now a hot topic commodity now. VoIP? No. Sorry. Just no. I said it on the PSP411 forums back when the idea was first tossed around, the PSP IS and WILL fail going into the mobile IP market in this arm.

captain : I was a bit surprised, the PSP just seemed to go from being a hot toy to a bad western film, tumbleweeds and all. I wonder if things will be different if the PSP2 (if there will be one) has two analog joysticks?

mjan1234 : PSP is totally AWESOME, SOCOM: Fireteam Bravo alone makes the PSP worth having. Plus you have a device that's portable, elegant looking w/widescreen that allows you to view videos your dvds, home movies, listen to music, play games, etc, etc, etc, not only will the psp continue to evolve, but it will dominate the portable gaming systems.

mikeh : All my PSP is doing right now is being a music player instead of my broken iPod, and it will probably fulfill that role for evermore.

sjakcar : What I want to know is why do we have to wait till this fall for any good game to come out? What about now, this sux! I am convinced more than ever that Sony is run by a bunch of syphilitic chimps!

sjakcar : You know what else burns me, MS is going to come out with a Portable gaming system next year and they will have learned from all the mistakes and short comings that Sony designed into the PSP and Kill it quicker than you can say "Wheres the other analog stick Sony"!

thepixelator : I think it's currently vogue to bash Sony right now, with their PS3 pricing and faltering UMD retail distribution and sales (I say stipulate those because the production of the films doesn't seem to be flagging).

In reality, the PSP has many good games, and every major review or critic site lists more AA-AAA titles than the DS, despite a big head start the DS enjoyed from November 2004 to March 2005 in the US market. The types of games are different, as Nintendo consoles and systems always are, with a greater emphasis on pick-up-and-play, younger-oriented titles on the DS than the PSP. But are the games really more 'fun'? I think it's entirely up to the player. Some tastes will run more to the SOCOM/Syphon Filter/GTA stuff, some will prefer Mario Bros/Pokemon/Yoshi. And the two genres or character series aren't mutually exclusive to all gamers, but I do find the majority of harsh PSP critics to be less interested in a GTA deathmatch than they are a Mario Kart race. Simple tastes and individual preferences - NOT indicative of the PSP library sucking, or the third/first party community being a "bad western film with tumbleweeds." A quick glance at the upcoming release schedule is rather strong evidence to the contrary.

I'm a gamer who enjoys many different genres equally. I like a good Mario game, a puzzler, a GTA slaughterfest, some multiplayer Burnout and horror like Resident Evil (the DS port is quite disappointing, BTW). I have more PSP games to play right now than I have time for, and I'm not biased for Sony or the PSP - I own a black Phat DS and a white DS Lite I ordered from HK with about 15 games. I've also owned every handheld game system except the Bandai Wonderswan, watched the NeoGeo go down in flames, the Lynx, the GameGear, Nomad, The PSP isn't like those. It's not abandoned, it's not failing.

I think some folks just really like to jump on the Sony hate bandwagon - regardless of whether it's valid.

ghostblur : When the playstation one first came out, there were not that many great games for it. Have you tried to go back and play those games recently? I find it painful. When the playstation 2 came out, there were not that many great games for it either. Look at where the playstation 2 is now. They keep pushing that system to its maximum potential. Eventually the psp will make that progress as well. Some day the PSP will have the Metal Gear Solid 2 of games. Why are we so quick to judge it's early software development? In my opinion I wish that would have made patch upgrades to the PS2 like they are doing with the PSP. Why was there never an online browser for the PS2? That is one of the things they promised right before it came out. The playstation 2 is going to change the way we think of livingroom entertainment with it's multimedia madness! Well that never really came about. They're online structure sucked monkey balls.

I think Sony is on the right track with the PSP.
