Gunfinger - General - Return to Castlevania

I downloaded Castlevania IV last night - my first experience of the Wii virtual console. Nice and simple it was too. Nothing else had really caught my fancy - actually Gunstar Heroes did (which I reviewed for Mean Machines for it first came out - it blew me away).

I used to be obsessed with that game. Something about the bosses and the rotating bits - Mode 7 rawks! Actually it didn't look quite as sensational last night after 14 years. Somewhat rough around the edges. But still highly enjoyable to play and the feeling of the whip is still lovely, especially when you dangle it. Very smart that. Also swinging on rings - I am a sucker for that kind of activity. If they had just realised that Castlevania is all about the whip the series would not have lost its way, which is did with Bloodlines, back on the megadrive.
